A “backlink” is defined as an outgoing link from someone else’s website, which points to your website address. Backlinks are very important to any search engine algorithm and include a term called “Anchor Text.” Anchor text is the portion of the actual live link that points to your website. For instance, my anchor text would be something similar to a highly competitive keyword or “search string,” such as: Virginia Beach, VA Real Estate (usually followed by a text description which is less important in the eyes of a spider). On average, because our industry is very competitive, it will take a minimum of 2,000 backlinks to see any type of traffic from MSN, Yahoo, or Google. You should also try to very your “anchor text” every few backlinks to avoid looking spammy in the eyes of a spider (Spiders crawl your code and index your website). It’s a process, but well worth the effort.
